Learn more about Cyprus:
It is located in the eastern Mediterranean Sea; referred to as "The Island of Aphrodite" and conquered by Alexander the Great in 333 B.C.
It was later absorbed in the Roman Empire in 58 B.C., and subsequently included in the Byzantine Empire in 395 A.D.
The island was called the Kingdom of Cyprus, during the crusader period (1100-1489) and a territory of the Republic of Venice from 1489 to 1571. The Ottoman Turks took it under Turkish control in 1571, and subsequently gave it to the British Empire in 1878.
Britain granted independence to a unified Cyprus in 1960; however, a Turkish invasion divided the island into a Turkish north and Greek south in 1974.
